The Zagorochoria

The Zagorochoria, meaning the Villages of Zagori, form a remarkable network of 46 traditional stone villages scattered throughout the mountains of Epirus. Each village has its own distinct character yet shares a common architectural heritage and a way of life shaped by the surrounding landscape. uilt almost entirely from local stone, slate, and timber, these settlements reflect centuries of craftsmanship, in which architecture, function, and nature coexist in remarkable harmony. Elegant mansions, cobbled streets, stone fountains, arched bridges, and historic churches reveal a cultural landscape that has remained largely unchanged. Ancient cobbled footpaths, once the only routes connecting the villages, now form an extensive network of walking trails that lead through forests, river valleys, monasteries, traditional bridges, and breathtaking viewpoints. Exploring the Zagorochoria is not simply a journey from one village to another but an opportunity to experience one of Europe’s most authentic mountain landscapes, where history and everyday life continue to coexist.
