29 Aug Zagori: At the Crossroads of History (1919–1925)
The assassination of General Tellini, the Italian occupation in Zagori, and the memory that changed the land
After World War I, the League of Nations was tasked with defining the Greek–Albanian borders.
In 1919, a special boundary commission was formed, led by Italian General Enrico Tellini.
In 1923, Tellini was assassinated near Kakavia, sparking Italian military intervention.
Ioannina was temporarily occupied, and the border was pushed deeper into Zagori, between the plains of Ano and Kato Pedina.
During the occupation, Italian troops fed their horses and mules on the vineyards of Kato Pedina.
The vines were destroyed completely and never replanted, leaving a lasting mark on the village’s agricultural memory.
In 1924, the Corfu Incident forced a partial Italian withdrawal, and in 1925 the borders were finalized, remaining as they are today.
Zagori carries the weight of these historic events. At Apeiros Chora, we honor these stories, inviting our guests to discover the land not only through its natural beauty but also through the memory of its past.
