Winter view of Saint Athanasios, the Kato Pedina village parish church in Zagori. The village is part of a network of 46 villages that comprise the area of Zagori, another name Zagorochoria, on the mountainous side of the Epirus region in northwestern mainland Greece.

More than 350 years old, the church is architecturally composed of an array of monastery-style domes and contains exquisitely crafted wood-carved iconostasis in miniature similar to the same saint name metropolitan church of Ioannina, the Epirus capital.

February is a relatively relaxed month for Zagorochoria. So at this time of the year, with the gold and long nights ahead, wine time and tasting is a tradition coming from the past. In fact, for some of the Zagori villages, there was a local cultivation of grapes which, with the events that followed between the two great wars, was eventually abandoned. However, the habit of wine drinking and tasting, I.e., checking the color, aroma, and taste, is often densely repeated by the locals and its guests because, if anything else, traditions must be preserved 🍷
